"The heritage of the Guerricabeitia brothers and the instruments of historical remembrance in the Old and the New World" (2015)

In October 2016, twenty-four award winners from EUSTORY competitions met at a History Camp in Georgia. For this occasion they prepared posters about their projects and findings which were displayed in the National History Museum in Tbilisi.

My competition entry was about two brothers of my town who escaped from Franco‘s dictatorship to France and to the United States: José Guerricabeitia founded a magazine in Paris, whereas Jesús became a successful merchant in the New World.

How did you decide on your topic?
The first time I heard the name “Guerricabeitia” was in school. My classmates and I wondered that they were not well known, especially in our hometown, because both of them played an important role for Spanish culture. Therefore, we wanted the research paper to pay tribute to the Guerricabeitia brothers and the instruments of historical remembrance.

How did you react when you came upon surprising points during your research?
Participating in the Spanish EUSTORY History Competition has been an unforgettable experience. I learnt so much about the past of my country during the research. Now, after having heard about and analyzed the atrocious life conditions, I see the future differently. Working on the past  gave me a new perspective on the future.

Take a closer look at Pablo’s poster here.

For his project about the heritage of the Guerricabeitia brothers, Pablo was awarded second prize in the Spanish history competition.
