Under the pressure of current crises and driven by strengthened populist movements, Europe is struggling for its future. The ratio of the nation state and Europe, of individual interests and solidarity is being tested. In the battle for the sovereignty of interpretation national history serves as quarry for political rhetoric.

This year’s EUSTORY History Camps take up the challenge to clarify one-sided interpretations of history and nationalistic narrowing. Forty-five EUSTORY award winners are offered the great opportunity to learn across borders what separates and what unites us in Europe.

The participants of the History Camp »Backpacking Visegrád with Pen and Camera - Traces of Social Movement in Past and Present« will look for traces of civic movements in Hungary, the Czech Republic and Poland and deal with the role of media and public in the context of past and present protests. They will meet representatives of the media, both state and independent, and talk to activists, contemporary witnesses and experts about the topic. Furthermore they will get journalistically active themselves and blog about their experiences and learnings during the journey. This EUSTORY History Camp will take place in the end of September. It is organised by EUSTORY in cooperation with the European Solidarity Center in Warsaw/Poland and the PANT Citizens’ Association in Ostrava/The Czech Republic.

The second History Camp »United or Divided in Diversity? National Identities in Europe« will take 25 EUSTORY prize winners to Georgia. There, they will deal with the topic of national identities:  What do we stand for - as individuals, as members of certain groups, as citizens of our countries? How does nationalism arise? In Tbilisi, the participants will investigate the past and present of Georgia and deal with people’s everyday life and self-image in a rather young nation state in Europe. They present their results during a public closing ceremony. This EUSTORY History Camp will take place in the beginning of October. It is organised by EUSTORY in cooperation with the DVV International’s Project Office Tbilisi/Georgia.
